Planning where somebody will live,as they move through life. For all of us we move from one accommodation to another as our lives develop and our requirements change. For all of us there are dreams about where we live, and there is the reality of what is possible – as far as is practicable we match our dreams to what we can do in reality – This is also the PCP process.

Health

DADAA – Association of People with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Autism and Asperger (Greece)

Despite the fact that health issues and treatment for patients with ASC are often structured in terms of the patient’s life stages, some issues occur in most people of every age as well as some strategies or fields of support are relevant to all when they need to take care of their health. When a visit to a doctor or medical institution is imminent, some reasons that can trigger anxiety to the person in question and/or those who take care of them are sensory issues (lights, noise, tactile system), communication issues, fear of the unexpected and personal space and body awareness that can be dealt with preparation, social scripts, visual support, time indicators and relaxation techniques among others.

Education

DADAA  (Greece)

Every person has needs and preferences that are particular to them. Children’s education should help them fully develop their personalities, talents and abilities. This is also valid for children or young people with an Autism Spectrum Condition although they do not usually make their own decisions as far as their education is concerned. However, according to the PCP approach, such a thing can be realized with careful planning.

Transportation

Cyclisis (Greece)

Another area that many persons in the autism spectrum face many difficulties in is the transportation as they have to rely, almost exclusively, on their caregivers (or anyone from their support circle) or the public means of transit in order to move about for their business. From our experience, the current transportation options do not meet the needs of people with autism and so there is a high level of dependence upon their caregivers.

Keeping safe

Cyclisis (Greece)

The final area of the proposed life-planning tools refers to the safety of the persons in the autism spectrum. It’s the main parents’/carers’ concern because autism presents some vulnerabilities, like sensory processing challenges, that may put the person with autism in unsafe situations even without their knowing. Safety is a vast area to cover (inside or outside the home, community, internet, workplace etc) so the main goal of this particular tool will be to provide (especially) the support circle with indications of the person’s with autism abilities in order to plan the course of action in case of an emergency.
